Stop commercial driverless taxis until drivers come first

A working driver started this petition, not a union or a company. Thomas Freitas of the Private Hire & Taxi Driver’s Network is asking Parliament to stop commercial driverless taxis until drivers’ livelihoods and public safety come first.

At 10,000 signatures the government must respond on the record. At 100,000 it is considered for a debate in Parliament.

Write to your MP about driverless taxis

Your MP can raise this in Parliament, write to the Transport Secretary, and put questions to TfL. It takes three minutes.

Subject: Driverless taxis in London and the impact on licensed PHV drivers in your constituency

Dear [MP name],

I am writing to you as a constituent and as a licensed private hire driver in London.

Robotaxis are now carrying paying passengers on London’s streets. TfL has licensed 15 Wayve vehicles, fitted with self-driving technology, to carry Uber passengers with a licensed driver on board, approving the self-driving equipment on a trial basis. Uber has told US regulators, in its own policy paper, that one autonomous vehicle does the work of four drivers. It has never said this publicly in London.

TfL figures show 94,258 licensed private hire vehicles in London. The drivers who work them support families and pay mortgages on this income. Yet TfL has confirmed it holds no five-year projection of private hire driver numbers, and there is no published assessment of what autonomous vehicles will mean for our livelihoods.

I am asking you to:

1. Write to the Secretary of State for Transport asking for a published assessment of the impact on licensed private hire drivers before any fully driverless taxi service is approved in London.

2. Ask TfL what evidence it will require before extending its approval of these vehicles beyond the current trial, and whether the impact on existing drivers’ earnings will be considered.
